About the Land's End to John O'Groats Cycle

The most famous cycling route in the UK taking you to the extremities of Great Britain.

The LEJOG route, more commonly known as Land’s End to John O’Groats, starts in the most Westerly point of the British Isles. The ride traverses the hilly Cornish terrain before a tough stretch up and over the spectacular Dartmoor landscape. Aiming for a night in the beautiful Roman City of Bath, the ride will take you through the Mendips, including the famous Cheddar Gorge. From Bath, you’ll cross the River Severn into Wales and skirt the Welsh boarder before entering Western England.

The latter half of the trip takes you through the breathtaking Lake District for a rest day and traversing the stunning Scottish Highlands. The final leg will have you following the remote North Coast of Scotland to the most North East point of the UK, John O’Groats. The journey of roughly 1,000 miles will be a true test and one which will never be forgotten. What more rewarding way could there be to see the beauty of the UK?

Riding from Land’s End to John O’Groats will be one of the most rewarding challenges you take on, but first we know you must have lots of questions. Here’s the information you need to be able to take on the supported ride with us.

We have always prided ourselves in being a charity bike ride suitable to all cycling abilities! Whether you’re a beginner cyclist or an experienced rider, our trip is well suited to you. We can help you with training too!

There is no set riding speed, no set groups to ride in or cutoff times to make. Enjoy the ride at your speed, whether that’s riding steady all day and taking in the views or riding harder with longer breaks through the day. There is no one way to take on this adventure!

You have from sunrise to sunset to cover the mileage for the day and we will be there to support you along the way. There is no competition, no sense of holding up others and no feeling of others impacting your adventure.

With an achievable £1.50 per mile, £1,530 total fundraising target, there’s no more cost effective way to travel. Funds raised will go towards supporting those living with MS across the UK, as well as raising awareness for multiple sclerosis and funding research to find a cure.

You can raise these funds in a way that best suits you. That can be fully funded by donors, a mix of donors and self funded or fully self funded.

With an initial registration donations of just £25, the majority of trip related items are covered such as vehicle support, route leaders, a team cycling jersey, overnight accommodation and much more. This leaves you only having to worry about travel costs to and from the trip and food during the ride.

Arranging your own food allows you to eat at your budget, whether that’s cooking in camp every evening, eating out throughout or a mixture of the two.

We aim for a team size of approximately 20 riders. This creates a friendly, non competitive team environment for all to enjoying riding from Land’s End to Scotland.

We will arrange the accommodation for the trip, including in Land’s End and at the finish in John O’Groats. To allow us to donate as much of your hard earned fundraising as possible, our accommodations are minimalist.

The teams often stay at generous hosts on route. This includes a mix of camping, staying at churches, town halls and community centres. If preferred, you have the option to book alternative accommodation.

We provide you the platform to help you reach your goal to ride across Britain. This is a supported bike tour where roughing it is embraced.

Your gear will be carried by our support vehicles. Your volunteer route leaders will be there to help you along the way. A mechanic will help you keep your bike rolling with minor repairs. Water stops will be set up every 20-30 miles depending on the terrain. Nightly accommodations will be booked.

It’s just the pedalling that’s up to you!

Preparing the right gear is crucial for your LEJOG adventure. You’ll need your own camping essentials, including a tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad. The choice of bringing cooking gear depends on your preference for eating out or preparing meals in camp.

For your convenience, we provide an 80 litre storage box to transport your gear from camp to camp in our support van. Additionally, a smaller 16 litre day box for essential items will be accessible at rest stops during the ride.

Regarding your bike and biking equipment, it’s important to be comfortable on your bike and have trained on it. However, we’re here to help if you need advice on bike rentals or any other equipment. Once registered, we’ll provide a comprehensive gear list detailing everything you’ll need for a successful and enjoyable ride.

Yes, eBikes are welcome on the Land’s End to John O’Groats route. We understand that eBikes can make the challenge more accessible and enjoyable for riders.

However, it’s important to ensure your eBike is suitable for long-distance touring and is capable of handling the route’s varied terrain. Please be mindful of the battery range and plan accordingly, as charging opportunities may be limited depending on the daily itinerary and type of accommodation.

We recommend sourcing a second battery for the trip so you always have a backup and can have it charging while out riding. We also have our Jackery power units available in camp and at rest stops to top up charge when needed.

Our LEJOG route, developed over 10 years of experience, spans 1,020 miles, offering a blend of challenging terrains and picturesque landscapes. While embracing rugged areas like Dartmoor and the Lake District, our route carefully avoids busy A roads where possible for a safer and more enjoyable experience.

The journey navigates through tranquil countryside, charming towns, and regions of natural beauty, enhancing the cycling experience. This choice of route provides a comprehensive exploration of Britain’s diverse landscapes and cultural heritage.

Our organised MS tour spans 15 days, intentionally designed to strike a balance between challenging riding days and enjoying the journey.

This duration includes a rest day and time allocated to interact with MS groups along the route, enriching the experience beyond the physical challenge.

It offers a pace that is rigorous yet manageable, allowing you to fully appreciate the journey and the beauty of the UK landscapes, all while supporting a meaningful cause.

Training for LEJOG is crucial to making sure you have a good experience. In our opinion the most important aspect is being comfortable for long periods on the bike you plan to ride for the trip. A bike fit and your local bike shop is highly recommended.

Being consistent with training and building up your weekly riding time slowly should be your main goal. Focus on increasing the duration of your rides, rather than the speed, as this will be more representative of the relaxed riding environment of the trip. As your length of rides increase, be sure to take breaks to eat and drink throughout to fuel your ride! 

Any rider signing up to ride with Bike the UK for MS will have the option of receiving a specific training plan for the challenge their taking on or ask questions about their training.

Travelling to Land’s End tends to be a little easier than getting back from John O’Groats.

The easiest option is to take the train to Penzance and then a taxi to Land’s End itself. When booking the train, be sure to reserve a bike space with your ticket! Be sure to mention you have a bike and gear when booking the taxi too.

Flying in from abroad? The best option is to fly into London and take the direct train to Penzance.

There are a couple of options for getting from John O’Groats to Inverness. Once in Inverness there are then trains, planes and buses to the rest of the UK or abroad.

The easiest option is using John O’Groats Bike Transport. They will pick you up from John O’Groats and drive you directly to Inverness. Be sure to book early and group up with others to make this more cost effective.

Trains run from nearby Wick or Thurso to Inverness. Check the frequency of these trains and be sure to book a bike space with your ticket.

Buses from John O’Groats to Inverness have required bikes to be boxed, but policies are often changing. Be sure to check with the provider that you can travel with your bike before booking your bus ticket.
